Neerja Bhanot, a flight attendant, was the youngest and first woman to receive India’s highest peacetime gallantry honor, the Ashoka Chakra. Neerja, a 23-year-old woman who was killed on September 5, 1986, while attempting to protect passengers from terrorists aboard hijacked PanAm Flight 73, received the award posthumously.
