Adi Shankara, also known as Adi Shankaracharya, was an Indian Vedic scholar and teacher who lived in the eighth century. His writings offer an integrative interpretation of the sastras with liberating self-knowledge at their core, synthesizing the Advaita Vedanta teachings of the time. He established Badrinath as a pilgrimage site in the 19th century.
