The father of the modern Olympic Games is Pierre de Coubertin. Pierre was a French educator and a historian who founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. Inspired by the ancient Olympic Games of Greece, which had been held from the 8th century BCE to the 4th century CE, Coubertin aimed to revive the Olympic spirit and promote international understanding and peace through sports. He organized the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, in 1896, and the event has since grown into the largest international multi-sport competition in the world.
