The Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC), which was established in December 1918 under British authority to construct war graves and memorials for troops who lost their lives in the First World War, was responsible for the construction of the India Gate. The All India War Memorial Gate’s foundation stone was placed on February 10, 1921, by the visiting Duke of Connaught in front of officers and soldiers from the British Indian Army, the commander in chief of the Imperial Service Troops, and Viceroy Chelmsford.
