The first woman to serve as Governor of an independent India was Sarojini Naidu. From August 15, 1947, to March 2, 1949, she served as the governor of Uttar Pradesh. She was known as the Nightingale of India or Bharat Kokila, and she actively took part in the Indian freedom movement as well as being a fervent follower of Mahatma Gandhi. She was also a well-known participant in the Salt Satyagraha and the Quit India Campaign. In 1925, she was selected as president of the Indian National Congress. She was the first Indian woman and the second woman to serve as President of the Indian National Congress.
