India’s First female prime minister to hold office for three consecutive terms was Indira Gandhi. As prime minister, she took over for Lal Bahadur Shastri. Jawaharlal Nehru has only one child, Indira Gandhi.
She had a significant role in the Indian National Congress and was the second longest-serving Indian Prime Minister. In 1955, Mrs. Indira Gandhi won a seat on the Congress Party’s executive committee. She was elected party president in 1959, and in 1964, she was given a promotion to a crucial post in Lal Bahadur Shastri’s government. From 1966 to 1977, she served as prime minister for three consecutive terms. From 1980 to 1984, she served a fourth term as prime minister.
